Education and community architecture in NSW
Alongside residential and commercial work, Source Architects takes on selected public and community projects across regional New South Wales, including education buildings. The studio is based at 146 Lords Place, Orange, and led by David Sutherland (Registered Architect NSW 7572) and Sally Sutherland (Registered Architect NSW 7587), who work directly with clients rather than through a project team, which suits committees, boards and school communities that need to be part of the conversation.
Buildings that have to work hard
Education and community buildings are used intensively by a lot of people with different needs. Movement, supervision, acoustics, daylight, durability and running cost matter more here than in almost any other building type, and none of them can be fixed after the fact.
Heritage campuses
Many regional schools and community organisations occupy nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings that are loved but no longer suit how they are used. Working new facilities into those buildings without damaging them is the same discipline as our heritage architecture.
Funded in stages, planned as a whole
Public and community budgets arrive in instalments. A master plan lets each funded stage be useful on its own while still building towards a coherent campus, and gives funding bodies something clear to assess.

A stable, considered part of the practice’s work
Education projects sit alongside the practice’s residential work by design, not as an occasional side project taken on when other work is quiet. It’s a deliberate area of focus chosen partly for the nature of the sector: projects are planned years in advance, briefs are developed carefully with staff and stakeholders, and the same level of care given to a private house extends to how a school building is documented and delivered.
Working within a school’s rhythm, not around it
A school campus rarely stops operating for a building project. Staging, timing and construction sequencing have to work around terms, exam periods and the daily movement of students and staff, in a way a standalone commercial site doesn’t need to consider. Getting that sequencing right, alongside the design itself, is as much a part of delivering an education project well as the architecture is.
