Alongside its residential work, Source Architects takes on selected commercial, hospitality, mixed use and public projects across New South Wales. The practice’s work at Montoro Wines was recognised with a NSW AIA Country Award, one of two the studio has received alongside a State Architecture Award. David Sutherland (Registered Architect NSW 7572) and Sally Sutherland (Registered Architect NSW 7587) lead each project personally, from feasibility through to contract administration on site.
Design is a commercial decision
For a business, a building is a working asset. How customers arrive, where they linger, how staff move, what the place looks like in a photograph and what it costs to run all follow from decisions made early in design. Treating that as an afterthought is what produces premises that quietly cost money for twenty years.
Local knowledge, local approvals
The studio has worked from Orange since 2013, which means knowing the councils, the planning controls, the heritage constraints in town centres and the builders and trades who can actually deliver the work. Adaptive reuse
Regional New South Wales is full of good buildings doing nothing. Bringing one back into use is often cheaper, faster to approve and far more distinctive than building new, and it draws directly on the practice’s heritage experience.
Bringing town centre buildings back to life
Country town centres, Orange included, hold good older building stock that is underused. Returning one of those buildings to commercial life usually costs less than a new build, keeps a business in the part of town where its customers already are, and gives it premises nobody else can copy.
